High Serum Insulin Levels And Risk Of Prostate Cancer

Elevated insulin levels in the normal range appear to be associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, according to a new study published online August 21 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Insulin-like growth factors appear to be involved in the development of prostate cancer, but the relationship between circulating insulin levels and prostate cancer risk has been unclear. Demetrius Albanes, M.D., of the Nutritional Epidemiology Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., and colleagues investigated the relationship of the level of serum insulin and glucose, as well as surrogate indices of insulin resistance, to the development of prostate cancer. No one handles a cancer diagnosis in the same way. After you find out you have cancer, you may feel afraid, anxious, angry or overwhelmed. You may even feel numb or confused. It might be hard to listen to what the doctor is saying or remember what people tell you to do. You probably have many questions and may not know where to begin or how to cope. Your own personal beliefs and experiences will help you face the disease and figure out how to handle it. ]]

New Prognostic Marker For Human Breast Cancer

Elevated levels of GLI1 (glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1) protein in human breast cancer are associated with unfavorable prognosis and progressive stages of disease. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Cancer found increased expression of GLI1 in samples taken from more advanced and less survivable tumors. Edgar Dahl led a team of researchers from RWTH Aachen's University Hospital who sought to evaluate whether GLI1 could represent a new prognostic marker in breast cancer treatment. He said, "GLI1, a mediator of the so-called 'hedgehog' signaling pathway, has previously been implicated in the development of different human tumor entities. We've found a positive, significant association between overexpression of GLI1 a...

Need Your Help

Hey everyone!!!! I am a photo major at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and FINALLY in my senior year. I have a show that is coming up Oct. 7 and the basis of my work for this show revolves around the idea of confronting or coping with cancer. I had thyroid cancer over 2 years ago and I know that working with my photography and expressing my emotiongs through has really helped me cope with the idea of having it. A lot of my work recently has really evolved around that idea and this year I really want to focus on other people's stories of confronting their cancer or disease and really show that expressing that through art really is a great therapy tool. Here is where you all come in.... Do you know anyone that has had cancer or a disease that would be willing to share a story, poem, song, etc. that has really helped them get through the tough time? I would need a photo of this person and whatever it is they use to get through a rough time or day. These would remain completely anonymous. The only other thing I would be including would be a diagnosed date. Basically I am taking the words and the outline of the person and etching onto a mirror. The mirror is to get viewers to put themselves into this person's shoes and see that they are not alone if they are experiencing a similar thing. If you have any questions just email me here on the forum I really appreciate it! Thanks, Erin Van Leer

Blood Cancer Symptoms

Blood Cancer is the disease caused by the uncontrolled growth of the blood cells. Blood cancer is termed as Leukemia in the scientific terms. Specifically the white blood cells donÂ't grow properly in the cases of blood cancer. These white blood cells are produced in bone marrow. These cells grow uncontrollably in the bone marrow. These cells are actually the dead cells with no benefits to the body, but cause harm to the body. This way the abnormal proliferation of the blood cells causes blood cancer. The symptoms of the blood cancer are as follows— • Fatigue and weakness on daily basis is the most common blood cancer symptom. You will feel tired even in the morning after the hours of sleep. You get tired very easily. • Excessive weight loss is noted in the patients of the blood cancer. If you have lost up to 10 pounds of weight without any reason then you need to consult the doctor. • Sweating a lot and specifically without any physical activity is a symptom of blood cancer. You should check out with your doctor if you are sweating a lot. • Fever is observed in the early phases of the leukemia. This symptom occurs once the cancer starts spreading in your body. Fever is observed when the cancer cells starts affecting your immune system.

I found this poem of courage & felt like this was the perfect place for it. Enjoy!

Author: Shannon Kathleen Moore, USA
Poem: Courage

Courage is a wonderful phenomenon
Anyone can possess it indeed
It is an everlasting feeling
Grown from a tender and loving seed

Courage is in a dying and sick child
With the biggest heart all can see
Fighting with every inch of their body
Loving life more than you and me

It is a brave and heroic firefighter
Running into a firestorm of hell
Saving lives and futures of strangers
Our own miraculous wishing well

A soldier in a fiery and deadly war
Losing brothers before their eyes
Fighting with their whole body and soul
Under a gloomy blood drenched sky

Courage is a breast cancer survivor
Beating death at its own game
Never giving up in the least bit
Rejoicing in their own personal fame

A single parent raising a child
More daunting and tedious than we see
Two roles molded into one
Becoming the mother, the father, the We

Courage is a relief aid worker
Traveling to a dangerous and foreign place
Helping the poor and unfortunate
Some things everyone should taste

Courage is beating a drug addiction
Demons consuming people’s lives
Ripping away our youth and innocence
Making us so much stronger, brave and wise

Courage is also standing up for yourself
When everyone is tearing you apart
Living the best life possible
And doing so with all your heart.

Cancer Stem Cells

Stem cell treatment (http://www.placidway.com/treatment-detail/31/Stem-Cell-Therapy-Treatment-Abroad/), research and technology is permanent fixture in 21st century medical research. Continued efforts to research and develop embryonic stem cell treatments and procedures doesn't merely mean cloning human beings or involve moral and ethical controversies or issues surrounding such research. Embryonic stem cells provide the basic building blocks and structure of the development of various cellular and tissue structure in the human body, and stem cell research irrefutably offers potential treatments that may eventually cure many disease processes, enable people with spinal cord injuries to walk again, and guide researchers to develop medications that will end to cognitive impairment diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. Millions of cells found in the human body can and are being developed for future medical treatments. Stem cells contain specific instructions on how cellular structures replicate and function. Each cell is also programmed with how long it will live, it's specific functions and tasks. Stem cells come from different sources. The most commonly studied, and used, stem cell therapies involve: • Embryonic stem cell therapy • Adult stem cell therapy and research • Umbilical cord stem cell therapy EmCell Therapy Professor Alexander Smikodub, M.D., PhD, is the founder of the Cell Therapy Clinic of the National Medical University and EmCell Clinic, as well as the inventor of treatment methods using embryonic stem cells in . The EmCell therapy clinic has been offering embryonic stem cell (http://www.placidway.com/subtreatment-detail/treatment,31,subtreatment,96.html/EmbryonicStemCellTherapyTreatmentAbroad) treatment in vivo to improve physical health for nearly two decades and has helped thousands of people suffering from disease processes like Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, various types of muscular dystrophy, blood diseases and cancers. Dr. Smikodub has performed thousands of embryonic stem cell transplants to international patients who arrived every month from foreign destinations such as China, Germany, and the United States (where stem cell therapy treatments have not been approved) to receive treatments that improve quality of life. International Clinical Experience The EmCell Therapy Clinic is one of the world's largest fetal or embryonic stem cell transplantation centers that addresses various conditions and disease processes. Embryonic stem cell research and development continues to offer curative effects, which is one of the most promising aspects of cell research and therapies. The am so clinic focuses their attention on embryonic stem cell transplantation related transplantation of the basic building blocks of all tissues and organs, not the tissues or organs themselves, that are responsible for various functions in the body and provide the basic structures for musculature, blood, immune system, nervous and other body systems. Stem cell therapies, and most potentially the potential of utilizing embryonic stem cells offer a multitude of benefits including but not limited to enabling cells to migrate directly to the site of injury or damage for repair or replication, establishing intercellular linkage and differentiation (developing into specific cellular structures such as muscle tissue, heart tissue, or neural tissues), In addition, benefits include enhancing immune responses and reducing and avoiding tissue and organ rejection. EmCell, based in Kiev, Ukraine, was founded in 1994, a private clinic that has gained international recognition and reputation in the field of embryonic stem cell research and clinical applications. Focusing on effective prevention and antiaging programs, and devising and developing treatments and follow-up for complex clinical cases, the EmCell clinic focuses on indications as well as contraindications for severe acquired and genetic disease processes that are caused by decreased cell counts. Embryonic stem cell research and development continues to be the most effective stem cell therapy yet developed by researchers and scientists. Embryonic stem cells are commonly cultivated from discarded fetuses or embryos resulting from abortions, and can be utilized to provide life-saving treatments for dozens of disease processes and health conditions. Medical Stem Cell Tourism The United States does not currently approve of stem cells therapy options, but Americans and other international travelers seek international destinations for promising treatments. Today, thousands of medical tourists venture to locations throughout the world, including China, Thailand, Japan, Europe, and India for treatments that offer beneficial and promising results. The cost of therapies is determined according to geographic location of treatment facilities as well as the injury, illness or disease being treated. The U.S. is currently funding Phase I clinical trials of some types of stem cell therapies that may provide productive and beneficial use in the near future. In the meantime, individuals can reap the benefits of stem cell research and therapies offered around the world, such as the facilities found at EmCell Therapy in Kiev, Ukraine.

Scans Detect Recurring Prostate Cancer

BOLOGNA, Italy -- Italian researchers suggest using positron emission tomography and computer tomography with choline to detect recurring prostate cancer earlier. The study, published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, suggests the scans are quicker than conventional imaging in detecting recurring prostate cancer in those who have had the prostate and surrounding tissue removed. "In most patients with biochemical relapse after radical prostatectomy -- prostate removal -- conventional imaging methods often return false-negative results, meaning that the imaging techniques fail to detect cancer that is present in the body," lead author Dr. Paolo Castellucci of the University of Bologna in Italy said in a statement. Quality Of Life: Cancer Survivor Predictor

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- A person's quality of life prior to treatment can help predict the survival of patients with advanced, non-small cell, lung cancer, U.S. researchers said. The study, published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, pooled research from six clinical trials -- involving a total of 420 patients with advanced, non-small cell, lung cancer. Dr. Yingwei Qi of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and colleagues found patients' self-assessment of their pre-treatment quality of life -- measured by the single-item Spitzer Uniscale -- can alone predict overall survival, and that for those with a low score, the risk of death was twice as high as for those with high scores. "With the knowledge that quality of li...

How To Do Skin Cancer Checks

Skin cancer is the most common type of the disease, but even its most deadly form - melanoma - is very curable if caught early. Doctors recommend monthly self-exams in addition to regular checks from a professional: Use the right equipment. Make sure the room is brightly lit and look into a full-length mirror if possible. Use a handheld mirror to check hard-to-see areas, or ask a loved one to help. Know your markings. Learn where all your moles, spots and freckles are so you'll recognize new growths or changes in existing ones. Be thorough. Go from head to toe, without forgetting underarms, the tops and bottom of hands and feet, between fingers and toes, under nail beds and on your scalp (use a comb or hairdryer to part hair). L...

Discovery leads to rapid mouse 'personalized trials' in breast cancer

DURHAM, N.C. -- One person's breast cancer is not the same as another person's, because the gene mutations differ in each tumor. That makes it difficult to match the best therapy with the individual patient.

Using a finding that the genetic complexity of tumors in mice parallels that in humans, researchers at the Duke University Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy and Duke University Medical Center are starting trial studies in mice, just like human clinical trials, to evaluate whether understanding tumor diversity can improve cancer treatment.

Cancer Treatment Abroad

There are various treatments for those suffering from lung cancer (http://www.placidway.com/subtreatment-detail/treatment,27,subtreatment,191.html/LungCancerTreatmentTreatmentAbroad). Finding the best cancer treatment abroad is of utmost importance. As with any medical issue, the doctor will determine the best treatment for cancer based on the stage and type of cancer a patient has. One of the main forms of lung cancer treatments is through surgery, especially for those who have non-small cell lung cancer that has not spread to other areas of the body. Two common forms of cancer treatments are: • Chemotherapy • Radiation Radiation therapy treatments are given to patients after a radiation oncologist determines an optimal course of treatment based on the stage of cancer a patient is in. Chemotherapy (http://www.placidway.com/profile/717/) includes various drugs that are given by mouth or intravenously at various doses and frequencies, depending on doctor orders. A doctor specializing in medication treatments for cancer will determine the best medicine for fighting the tumor, as well as how long the treatment should last. Cancer prevention as well as alternative cancer treatment (http://www.placidway.com/profile/745/) options for patients is important, and many seek the advice of a cancer specialist for advice regarding the best cancer treatment centers as well as cancer treatments available today. Cancer treatment abroad (http://www.placidway.com/treatment-detail/27/Cancer-Treatment-Abroad/) offers international patients a choice for affordable and effective cancer treatment and care. Treating lung cancer early increases the chances of survival, and is also lowers the risk of the cancer spreading to other areas of the body. It has shown to reduce lung pain, breathing pain and other chronic lung diseases. While lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, not everyone who gets cancer smokes, with 10-15% being non-smokers. It is important to get a yearly checkup to make sure all internal organs are functioning and cancers are screened for. Check out facilities like the Almater Hospital in Mexicali, Mexico for world class accommodations and affordable medical care. In addition to the Almater Hospital, be sure to look at the Florence Nightingale Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey for advanced medical technology and superior service.

An Audit Of Analgesia Requirements For High-Dose-Rate Prostate Brachytherapy

High-dose-rate (HDR) prostate brachytherapy, as performed at our institution, requires the insertion of multiple transperineal catheters under anaesthesia (hereafter referred to as the 'intraoperative' period), after which the patient is allowed to recover from anaesthesia and the treatment is planned and carried out with afterloading of the radioactive source in several treatment sessions over the course of two days (hereafter the 'postoperative' period). The catheters are kept in position by a template sutured to the perineum. At the time of introduction of this new therapy at our institution, we assumed the catheters themselves, the template and the urinary catheter, along with potential bladder spasm, would cause at least moderate p...

Breathalyzer Test Detects Lung Cancer

Scientists in Israel have devised a portable breath tester that detects lung cancer with 86 percent accuracy, according to a study released Sunday. The device could provide an early warning system that flags the disease before tumours become visible in X-rays, the researchers reported in the journal Nature Nanotechnology. "Our results show great promise for fast, easy and cost-effective diagnosis and screening of lung cancer," they said. The sensor uses gold nanoparticles to detect levels of so-called volatile organic compounds (VOC) -- measured in a few parts per billion -- that become more elevated in cancer patients. Early detection of lung cancer dramatically increases the odds of survival. Currently, only 15 percent of case...

Cost-Effectiveness Of Cetuximab In Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

Earlier, patients whose tumors harbored wild-type KRAS were found to have a higher survival advantage when treated with cetuximab in a randomized trial by the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group. In this study, Nicole Mittmann, of the HOPE Research Centre Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, in Toronto, and colleagues used prospectively collected resource utilization and health utility data from that trial to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis to determin...

Peptide Stops Lung Tumor Growth In Mice

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- U.S. medical scientists say they have developed a treatment that is effective in blocking the growth of lung cancer tumors in mice. Wake Forest University School of Medicine researchers said their treatment using a specific peptide reduced tumor growth by inhibiting blood vessel formation and also shrunk the size of the tumors. "If you're diagnosed with lung cancer today, you've got a 15 percent chance of surviving five years -- and that's just devastating," said co-lead investigator Patricia Gallagher, director of the school's Molecular Biology Core Laboratory. Patterns Of Breast Cancer Presentation In The United States: Does Geography Matter?

Distribution of breast cancer varies widely throughout the United States. The factors that influence this geographic variability have not been completely defined. In addition, though a number of studies look at regional and state-to-state variability, few studies have examined this issue with regard to the nation as a whole. State-specific breast cancer data were available from the American College of Surgeons National Cancer Data Base in a series of Benchmark Reports. These data were reviewed and stratified with regard to: age at the time of presentation, race, and stage at the time of presentation. The data were further collected into regional cohorts that corresponded to the United States Census Bureau regions. Statistical analyses we...
